Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy
Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including open access procedures, polyp removal, ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound.
Clear answers from experienced endoscopists
A gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small bowel. A colonoscopy examines the large bowel. Both are performed under sedation, and allow your specialist to take biopsies and treat problems such as polyps during the same procedure.
Preparing for your procedure
- InstructionsYou’ll receive written preparation instructions when you book — please follow them closely.
- Fasting & bowel preparationYou’ll need to fast beforehand; colonoscopy also needs a bowel preparation the day before.
- On the dayBring your referral, Medicare and health fund cards, and a list of your medications.
- Going homeBecause of sedation, you’ll need someone to take you home and you shouldn’t drive for the rest of the day.
Taking blood thinners, diabetes medication or iron tablets? Tell us when you book — some medicines need to be adjusted before your procedure.
